Many Americans seem to be losing the ability to discuss controversial issues with respect and openness. Sometimes we avoid discussion altogether.  At others, we become overly judgmental, which frequently leads to name-calling.

 

As professional educators of the next generation of Americans, we believe that we should do all we can to model proper discourse.  It is especially important to do this when we are engaging someone who has a point of view at odds with our own.

 

We believe that we should defend any fellow citizen’s right to hold their viewpoints, whether or not we agree with them.  In this forum, we will provide a safe environment in which we will share ideas, while respecting each other without having to resort to threats or intimidation.  If we Americans can’t speak civilly to each other, we will have lost a lot more than a political battle.  Our ability to sustain democracy will disappear.  It is in this spirit that CTEN invites you to join CTOC, our online cyber community.
